Embellished Romance

Having found another new technique to go crazy with, I am proceeding with careless abandonment and wielding my paintbrush and tools with recklessness. Beware, anyone who walks into the workroom better be prepared for flying bits of metal and paint!

I have aimed for a vintage look with multiple layers of stamped brass and filigree topped off with Czech glass buttons.

Chain Maille

So recently had a major need to up my game and do something new with my jewelry. Yep, short attention span here which means trying a variety of methods to add to the current madness. I settled on playing with chain maille techniques. Love the contrast between the squared edges of the round rings!

Midnight Chain Maille Necklace My first adventure with chain maille! I used brass square wire rings for the mesh, then embossed and painted a midnight blue centerpiece.

Hmmmm, don’t you think we need a bracelet to go with the necklace? Sure!

Wisteria Riot

Our wisteria have gone crazy and are spectacularly lush and vibrant! I enjoy it while the lavender blossoms are here because they don’t last long.

Wisteria in Bloom

Purple riot!

The urge to paint in miniature the spectacular color riot was irresistible so I made a few pieces to reflect the stunning cascading blooms and hung them on the tree. Problem is, they blend in so well that the earrings, yep, there are earring in the photo, can’t be seen. Oops!

Lemon and Almond Biscotti

I have had the all consuming urge to bake. It hits me like that and I just need to play in the kitchen and make an ungodly mess for my poor hubbie to clean up (she says with an evil grin!). I have been fiddling with creating a lemon biscotti recipe, because biscotti are sweet, but not too much, and I am smitten with lemon cookies. Having discovered how yummy biscotti tastes using olive oil instead of butter, I tweaked a bunch of recipes to come up with these which have enough lemony flavor to bring a little sunshine to your day. I prefer biscotti crisp on the outside and soft on the inside so I don’t double bake them. They came out pretty delicious if I do say so myself!

Lemon and Almond Biscotti- yummy!

Lemon and Almond Biscotti

Lemon and Almond Biscotti

Yields about 40 biscotti.

•2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour

•1-1/2 cups granulated sugar

•2 tsp. baking powder

•3/4 tsp. salt

•Finely grated zest of 4 Meyers lemon to yield a 1/4 cup lightly packed

•2 cups coarsely chopped almonds (you never can have too many!)

•3 large eggs, at room temperature

•5 Tbs. olive oil

•3 Tbs. fresh lemon juice

Heat the oven to 350°F. Line three large baking sheets with parchment.

In a large bowl, whisk the flour with the sugar, baking powder, and salt to combine. Add the lemon zest, mix the zest into the flour to keep it from clumping. Stir the coated zest and the almonds into the rest of the flour mixture.

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, olive oil, and lemon juice until well blended. Pour into the flour mixture. Stir until the dough is blended. The dough will be very very very sticky so coat your hands in flour.

Divide the dough into six equal portions. Roll each portion into a log, but dusting with flour along the way to keep the dough from sticking too badly. Set the logs 2 to a baking sheets and then press gently to flatten each log so that it’s 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide.

Bake until the logs are golden and the tops are fairly firm near the center, 25 minutes. Set the sheets on racks until the logs are cool enough to handle, about 20 minutes. Transfer the logs to a cutting board and cut them on a sharp diagonal into slices 1/2 inch thick. I don’t twice-bake my biscotti because I like them soft.  If you like them harder, you can go the tradition twice-baked route. To double bake, leave the oven set to 350°F. Arrange the slices on the baking sheets, laying them flat with a cut side down. Return the baking sheets to the oven and bake the biscotti for about 6 minutes. Turn the biscotti over and bake until the biscotti are golden, another 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on the sheets on racks for 5 minutes before transferring them to racks to cool completely (the biscotti will get crisp as they cool). Store at room temperature or freeze in an airtight container.

Field of Flowers

Well, here’s another attempt at a field of wildflowers. I love bright colors and the way they mix together. It’s become an obsessive need to see what happens when you just keep adding more hues to the paper. Oh dear, is this a compulsion I need to rein in? Naw, it’s too much fun!

Okay, truth be told, Steve calls this painting Springtime in Hades, LOL! But regardless of my hubbie’s opinion, I thought I’d forge ahead and make another poppy necklace to celebrate spring, so there!

Poppies!

Yes, the poppies are out! I love the varied hues of sunshine dotting the landscape. They glow like stained glass when the sun sets them ablaze in early morning or late afternoon.

Another brain bubble trying to play with watercolors and jewelry at the same time. Rather psychedelic (or crazy)!

Green Green Green!

We have green! Yep, little shoots poking through the parched soil in shades of emerald, jade and verdigris just waiting for the next rain to flourish. Doing my rain dance!

Thought a few pieces to reflect the colors were in order:

Cobalt Iris Bracelet I embossed the metal and then added alcohol inks in colors of blue and green. I dapped it to get the domed look then sanded and buffed it to bring out the embossed design in the metal and sealed it with clear sealer. It gives it a lovely glow, I just love this technique! Then it is just like working a puzzle, finding just the right pieces to create a bracelet.

Buttons!

When I used to work with seed beads, I made elaborate bracelets using enameled and Czech glass buttons.  The bracelets were fun to make but took a tremendous amount of time. The teeny tiny seed beads were hard on my eyes, thus I don’t use them often anymore to make jewelry. Here are a few photos of some of my oldies but goodies:

These buttons are called Clossine. They were originally made in late 1800s by an Italian company. Each button is made of multiple layers of different materials such as enamel, metal and crystal. I decided to adorn it simply to allow the focus to be the lovely Clossine piece.

Here’s another woven bracelet with a handmade flower garden that I made a few years back:

Anyway, I decided that these lovely buttons that remain should be unearthed and included in my newest jewelry.

They are pressed from vintage molds and then ground, painted, and painstakingly detailed by hand. I framed it with brass filigree pieces and delicate ametrine rondelles and pale lavender pearls to enhance the Czech workmanship.

Stormy Skies

It’s actually been raining here! Yeah! Much needed water for the severe drought we have in California. Made me feel like embracing those purples and grays and blues and reflect them back in my jewelry.

Regency Dancing

I adore Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer and can never get enough of books on the Regency era.  The Regency period was ruled by elegance and etiquette and was characterized by distinctive trends in British culture, fashions, politics, and architecture.

A lovely young lady who I have the pleasure to know lives in Germany and is very involved in Regency dancing. Her wonderful mother helps make her dresses so I thought that a filigree wrapped vintage piece would work beautifully with the style of the period.

And then I went crazy making earrings that would dangle and gleam in a ballroom! What fun!
